“Non possiamo lasciare morire gli animali”. E ancora “la siccità lascia gli agricoltori siciliani in un futuro incerto”. Anche il “Guardian” racconta le campagne siciliane bruciate dal sole senza una goccia d’acqua. Il quotidiano britannico è andato nella provincia di Caltanissetta, la più colpita dal fenomeno, dove “Repubblica” ha fatto un reportage per raccontare i campi di grano un cui non cresce più una spiga, mentre gli animali bevono fango.
Il “Guardian” si sofferma sulle 200 capre di un allevatore che vagano alla ricerca di acqua e foraggi in “un paesaggio lunare”, per un’emergenza che ha portato la Regione a chiedere e ottenere dal Governo lo stato di emergenza. E racconta anche le difficoltà di approvvigionamento dell’acqua dai laghetti e dai pozzi, che si sono prosciugati o trasformati in fango. In una regione dove, tre anni fa, è stato toccato il record di 48 gradi e nei primi sei mesi del 2024 le precipitazioni sono diminuite del 40%. Mentre Coldiretti lancia l’allarme: “La mancanza di acqua è costata già 33mila posti di lavoro nei campi del Sud Italia”.
Poi il “Guardian” ha intervistato Christian Mulder, professore di Ecologia e cambiamenti climatici all’Università di Catania: “Dal 2030, un terzo del territorio siciliano diventerà un deserto, equiparabile ai territori di Libia e Tunisia”. E ancora la Sicilia sta affrontando le conseguenze concrete di decenni di cattiva gestione delle risorse idriche”.
A questo – riporta ancora il “Guardian” – si aggiunge l’emergenza incendi, che l’anno scorso in Sicilia, secondo dati della Protezione civile, ha distrutto poco meno di 700 ettari di boschi e vegetazione e ha causato danni per circa 60 milioni di euro.
